Outdoor Living

A classic barrel sauna for four, with rolling heat

The Outdoor Living Barrel Sauna Thermo is a round outdoor sauna in 40 mm spruce staves, with facing benches for four and a shingle roof. The round shape keeps the heat rolling around you, so it warms up quickly and stays cosy.

  • Rolling heat

Hot air rises along the curved walls and cooler air falls to be heated again, so warm air keeps moving around you.

  • 40 mm spruce staves

Thick spruce staves hold the heat in well and give the sauna a natural, authentic look and feel.

  • Facing benches for four

A bench with a backrest runs along each side, so four people can sit facing each other.

  • Glass door

A full-height glass door lets in daylight and opens outwards.

  • Shingle roof and steel hoops

Asphalt shingles cover the top to keep the rain off, and steel hoops hold the staves tight.

  • Backrests on both sides

Each bench has its own backrest, so everyone can sit back in comfort.

What it needs from your garden

It is a small building, so plan the base, the space around it and the power before it arrives.

A firm, level base

Concrete, paving or another hard, level surface, so the staves sit true and it can take about 550 kg, plus the people inside. Don't stand it on grass or soil.

Space around it

The sauna is 182 × 184 cm. The manual asks for at least 5 cm round the sides and 30 cm above. We suggest about 50 cm all round, so it is easy to treat the timber and look after it. At 191 cm tall it is under the usual 2.5 m limit for garden buildings near a boundary, but check with your local council.

A dedicated electric supply

Both heaters are hard-wired, not plugged in. A qualified electrician runs a dedicated supply from your consumer unit, on a standard 230 V supply, with an isolation switch near the sauna.

Built for a British garden

What is in the staves, the door and the roof.

Rain runs off, not in
How this barrel is built

Staves

40 mm spruce.

Thick spruce staves hold the heat well. Treat the timber inside and out twice a year to keep it sound.

What to watch for elsewhere

Thin staves.

Thin walls lose heat quickly, so the sauna takes longer to warm up.

Steel bandpulls it tight
How this barrel is built

Shape

Round, held by steel hoops.

Interlocking staves form the round shell and steel hoops pull it tight. The round shape keeps the heat rolling.

What to watch for elsewhere

Square cabins with corners.

Corners trap cooler air, so the heat is less even.

Asphalt shingles
How this barrel is built

Roof

Asphalt shingles.

Overlapping shingles shed rain off the curve of the barrel.

What to watch for elsewhere

Bare staves on top.

Without a covering, the top of the barrel takes the full force of the weather.

A bench down each side
How this barrel is built

Benches

Facing benches with backrests.

A bench runs down each side, so four people can sit facing each other.

What to watch for elsewhere

One bench.

A single bench makes it harder for four to sit comfortably.

Your heater and what it costs to run

Both heaters are Harvia 6 kW, which suits a barrel this size. The Wall comes with the Fenix Wi-Fi panel so you can warm it up from your phone; the Vega is set by hand with dials. Pick one above and the figures here follow your choice.

How we work this out: a 45-minute warm-up at full power, then a one-hour session with the heater on about half the time, so about 1.25 hours at full power. Electricity at 26.32p per kWh, the Ofgem price cap from October to December 2026. A month is 4.3 weeks. Your costs depend on your tariff, the weather and how hot you like it.

Your first sauna session

There is no wrong way to sauna, but this simple rhythm is how most Finns do it.

Hottest up highGentler lower downCoolest at your feetWater on the stones makes soft steam: löyly
  1. Warm it up

Switch on 30 to 45 minutes before. Most people enjoy 70 to 90°C. Take a quick shower first.

  2. Sit in the heat

Stay 8 to 15 minutes. Sit up tall for more heat, or put your feet up on the bench for even warmth. Ladle a little water on the stones for a burst of soft steam.

  3. Cool down

Step out for a cold shower, a dip in an ice bath or just fresh air.

  4. Rest and repeat

Sit down, drink some water, and when you are ready go back in. Two or three rounds is plenty.

Help from our UK team

Looking after the timber

Spruce is a natural timber, so a little care keeps it sound and looking good.

Treat it twice a year

Treat the wood inside and out twice a year, with products made for saunas and for temperatures over 110°C. It arrives treated.

Let it dry out

After a session, leave the door ajar so the inside dries. Don't use sealants inside: they can give off fumes in the heat.

Sit on a towel

It keeps the benches clean and stops sweat marks soaking into the spruce.

Check the stones

Re-stack the heater stones once a year and replace any that have crumbled.

Questions people ask

The things people usually want to know before they buy.

How many people fit?

Four, on two facing benches.

Why a barrel shape?

The curved walls keep the hot air moving round, so the heat is even and it warms up quickly for its size.

Which heater should I choose?

Both are 6 kW. The Wall has the Fenix Wi-Fi panel so you can start it from your phone; the Vega is the lower price and is set by hand.

Does the wood need treating?

Yes. We recommend treating it inside and out twice a year, with products made for saunas and for temperatures over 110°C.

Do I need an electrician?

Yes. Both heaters are hard-wired to their own supply from your consumer unit.

Can I pour water on the stones?

Yes. Both heaters hold stones. A ladle of water on the hot stones makes a burst of soft steam, called löyly.

Which way does the door open?

Outwards, as a sauna door should.
