Frequently asked questions about hot tub chlorine

  • What is chlorine?

Chlorine is the most popular sanitiser for most hot tub and swim spa owners as it’s extremely effective at killing bacteria, fast acting and easy to use. When you dissolve hot tub chlorine in water, it creates hypochlorous acid. This acid destroys waterborne bacteria on contact but deactivates over time. For this reason, you must regularly monitor your hot tub's chemical levels.

  • How much chlorine should I use in a hot tub?

Aim to maintain a chlorine level of 3 to 5mg/l at all times. How frequently you add more chlorine will depend on your usage and bathing habits. It could be daily, every two to three days or weekly. For 1mg/l, add 2g per 1000 litres. We only sell chlorine of the highest quality, saving you money, as less product lasts longer than inferior chlorine chemicals.

  • What kind of chlorine do you put in a hot tub?

Sodium dichlor is the type of chlorine used in hot tubs. You can choose from granules or tablets, depending on which works best for your needs.

  • Is it OK to go in a hot tub with high chlorine?

We don't recommend you go in your hot tub with high chlorine levels. High levels of chlorine can be harmful to your health, causing skin and eye irritation, including redness, itching, and dryness. It could also lead to reactions such as rashes or chemical burns, while inhaling strong chlorine fumes can also cause respiratory discomfort. Aim to maintain proper chlorine levels of 3-5 parts per million for safe bathing in your hot tub.

  • Is it OK to go in a hot tub with low chlorine?

We don't recommend you go in your hot tub with low chlorine levels. Low levels of chlorine mean your tub is not properly sanitised, which risks you bathing amongst algae and bacteria! Not only can this damage your health, but your hot tub's as well. Aim to maintain proper chlorine levels of 3-5 parts per million for safe bathing in your hot tub.
