Gas is quicker and easier: it lights at the press of a button, heats up in minutes and each burner has its own dial. Charcoal gives a smokier flavour, and a ceramic kamado holds its heat for hours, so it can smoke, roast and bake as well as grill. If you want both, a dual fuel BBQ has gas on one side and charcoal on the other.
More burners give you a bigger cooking area and separate heat zones, so you can sear on one side and keep food warm on the other. The 2 burner Boss Grill Louisiana has a 48.5 x 37.5 cm main grill, and the 6 burner Alabama Elite has 78 x 42 cm, with room for about 27 burgers at once. The cooking area for every model is on its product page.
Propane works all year round, including in cold weather, which is why it is the usual choice for BBQs used outside in the UK. Butane works best in warmer weather. Each gas BBQ lists the gas and regulator it uses on its product page.
A kamado is an egg-shaped ceramic charcoal grill. The thick ceramic holds its heat, so you can smoke low and slow, roast, bake pizza or sear steaks on the same grill. Kamado Joe grills run from 107°C to 399°C, and the Boss Grill Egg range runs from about 83°C for slow cooking to 330°C for searing. They come in sizes from the 15 inch Egg XS to the 27 inch King Egg and the 61 cm Big Joe.
An outdoor kitchen sets the BBQ into worktop units, with a sink, a fridge or a drinks cooler on some models, and storage underneath. Many are modular, so you can add units and build the layout to fit your garden. Outdoor kitchens and built-in BBQs start from £219.
Electric BBQs plug into the mains, so there is no gas bottle or charcoal. The Boss Grill portable electric BBQ has a 2.2kW element and a fold-away trolley, and the maker lists it as suitable for gardens, balconies, camping and caravans.

Most BBQs arrive in 3 to 5 working days. Delivery is £6.95 for smaller BBQs, £9.99 for mid-size models and £24.95 for larger BBQs that need a two-person delivery, with Saturday delivery available. Kamado Joe grills, the larger Boss Grill Eggs and some outdoor kitchens come on a pallet for £39.95, in 6 to 7 days. The delivery options for each BBQ are shown at checkout.
Boss Grill BBQs come with a manufacturer's warranty, 1 year on most models and 2 years on the Alabama Elite. Kamado Joe grills have a lifetime warranty on the ceramic parts. The warranty for every model is shown on its product page.
