Buying guide: hot tub O-rings and gaskets
A worn seal at a pump or heater joint can start a leak, and the drip is often hard to trace back to its source. You want the right O-ring or gasket the first time, so the joint stays watertight and the job does not have to be repeated.
Start by identifying the joint the seal fits, because a size name on a seal can refer to the pipe it connects to rather than the ring itself. Then measure the old seal, taking its inside diameter, outside diameter and thickness, rather than measuring the pipe. Finally, check the product page for a cross-reference number that matches the old seal before you order.

A seal can leak once it wears or fails at the joint, and a leak under a pump often points to failed seals. Check the seal and its joint before you assume the pump itself is at fault.
Not necessarily. A size name can refer to the hose or pipe the union connects to, while the ring is larger so it can sit inside the fitting.
Measure the inside diameter, the outside diameter and the thickness of the ring with a caliper, keeping it round and uncompressed. If you know two of these measurements, you can calculate the third.

It is safer to measure it and compare the result with the product page, since a seal that looks sound can still be the wrong size.
