How to Keep Ice Bath Water Clean
How to keep ice bath water clean: change it, test it, cover it
Clean ice bath water comes down to three habits: change it on schedule, test it before you get in, and keep the lid on between sessions. Each ice bath has its own routine, and here are the details for ours.
The short answer
Change the water on the schedule in your manual, test it before each session, and keep the lid on.
- 3 daysbetween water changes for the Outdoor Living IcePOD and IceTUB1
- 7 daysbetween water changes for the Chill Tubs Essential Pod3
- 6.5 to 8.5the pH range the IcePOD and IceTUB manual asks for1
The picture above marks the same four weeks twice: a water change every third day in coral, and every seventh day in blue.
Why cold water still needs care
Cold water helps, and it is only part of the picture. Legionella bacteria grow in water between 20°C and 45°C, and they do well in stored water and where scale, sludge or a film of organic matter has built up.2
The IcePOD and IceTUB manual asks you to keep the water under 20°C, which matters most in summer if the tub stays filled for a few days.1 Regular changes, a lid on between sessions and a clean surface take care of the rest. Standing water is also the reason the manual asks for the tub to be drained after use.1
Test the water before you get in
The manual asks for a pH between 6.5 and 8.5, tested with pH strips before you fill the tub.1 If your ice bath uses a sanitiser, test that before each session as well. One strip does both in seconds, and our water testing range has more options.
LaMotte Insta-Test 3 Plus test strips, £9.99
The Insta-Test 3 Plus strips read free chlorine, bromine, pH and total alkalinity, with 50 strips in a pack. Dip a strip in the water for 2 seconds, shake it once, and read the colours after 15 seconds.
Rinse off before you get in as well, as the manual advises.1
Sanitising, if your manual calls for it
The IcePOD and IceTUB manual calls for a suitable disinfectant daily, and for bromine tablets in a chemical floater after each use, up to a maximum of 20.1 Use only chemicals intended for cold water, non-electrical, blow-up tubs. Always add chemicals to the water and never the water to the chemicals, and stay out of the tub while the water is being treated.1
The Chill Tubs Essential Pod works differently. Change the water once a week, keep the lid on in between, and use no additives.3
Cleaning the tub itself
Drain the water
Empty the tub completely at each water change, and after your last session before you put it away. Standing water can cause bacteria and smells.1
Wipe the surface
Use a soft cloth and a mild, neutral detergent. Avoid hard brushes, abrasive materials and harsh cleaning chemicals.1
Clear the limescale
Gently scrub limescale around the inlets and outlets with a fine brush, so they do not block.1
Dry it completely
Make sure the tub is fully drained and completely dry before you fold it, and store it somewhere warm and dry, away from direct sunlight and above 0°C.1
For the Essential Pod, use warm soapy water
When you drain it, wash the inside with warm soapy water, and avoid strong bleach-based detergents, which can wear down the materials and the waterproof seals.3
Questions about ice bath water

Why keep ice bath water under 20°C?
Legionella bacteria can grow in water between 20°C and 45°C. The IcePOD and IceTUB manual asks you to keep the water under 20°C, which matters most in summer if the tub stays filled for a few days.
