Buying guide: plug and play hot tubs

Choose a plug and play hot tub that avoids a new power supply

You want a plug and play hot tub that you can start using once a suitable outdoor socket is in place, without planning a hard-wired supply first. Check whether your garden already has a socket protected by an RCD, and whether the heat-up time suits how you plan to use the tub. Check the plug type and the outlet before you order, because extension leads are not allowed.

Short answer

Can I plug a hot tub into a standard socket?

Plug-in hot tubs come with a standard three-pin plug, so they can run from an outdoor socket instead of a hard-wired supply. Check the product page to confirm the model is a plug-in type, and make sure the socket is protected by an RCD and suitable for outdoor use. Extension leads are not allowed, so plan the socket position before the tub arrives.

Start with your situation

No hard-wiring

You do not want to plan a hard-wired supply before using the tub

You want to plug in and start using the tub once the outlet is ready.

Check the product page for the plug type, then ask an electrician to confirm the outlet has RCD protection.

No outdoor socket

Your garden has no outdoor socket yet

You want to know the outlet work needed before you order, so you can plan it once.

Ask an electrician to quote for an RCD-protected outdoor socket and plan the cable route before the tub is delivered.

Home use

You want a tub for everyday use at home

You want a home tub you can use often, with a supply that matches your house.

Check the product page for home use and the plug type, and confirm the seat count suits the people who will use it.

Heating time

You worry a plug-in tub will heat more slowly than a hard-wired one

You want to understand the power trade-off before you choose a plug-in tub.

Ask the seller about the heat-up time for the model, and check whether it can be hard-wired later if you want more power.

Before you order

  • Check the plug type on the product page and confirm the tub is a plug-in model before you order.
  • Ask an electrician to confirm the outdoor socket is RCD-protected and suitable for outdoor equipment before delivery.
  • Use the socket directly, with no extension lead, because extension leads are not allowed.
  • Plan the cable route in armoured cable or a suitable enclosure, since loose cable should not be laid in the soil or clipped to a fence.
  • Check the manual for the base it recommends, and plan that base before delivery.

Questions about buying plug and play hot tubs

The questions below cover whether an electrician is needed, extension leads, heat-up time, later hard-wiring, socket position and winter use for plug and play tubs.

Plug-in models plug into a standard socket, but the outlet still needs to be suitable for outdoor use and protected by an RCD. Ask an electrician to confirm the socket before delivery.

Check the dimensions, seating and features on each product page before you order.
