A Finnish sauna is a traditional sauna: a heater warms the air and a load of stones, and you throw water on the stones to make steam. You can run it hot and dry or cooler and softer: Harvia describes 80 to 100°C as hot and dry and 50 to 60°C as humid and soft.

Most of our Finnish saunas are electric, with a Harvia heater of 6 to 9kW. Some Hekla models, the Cube 210 and 250 and the Barrel 210 and 250, can take a Linear 18 wood burner instead. Choose the heater you want on the product page.

Traditional saunas have a 6 to 9kW Harvia heater that is hardwired on its own supply, fitted by a qualified, registered electrician who can certify the work. The supply each model needs is on its product page.

It depends on the heater and how long you use it. Harvia says a 6kW heater uses about 4 to 5 kWh in the first hour while it heats up and 3 to 4 kWh in the second, about 7 to 9 kWh for a two-hour session. At the October to December 2026 price cap of 26.32p per kWh, that is about £1.85 to £2.40 a session.

A garden sauna is usually treated as an outbuilding, which in England can go up without planning permission as long as it is single storey, no more than 2.5 m tall if it is within 2 m of a boundary, not in front of the house, and together with other buildings and extensions covers no more than half the garden. All our outdoor saunas are under 2.5 m tall. Listed buildings, flats, maisonettes and designated land have their own rules, so your local planning authority can confirm the position for your address.
